Euroformula Open confirmed as support series to the Portuguese GP on 1-2 May

09.03.2021

GT Sport today confirmed that the Euroformula Open will be part, as an official support series, of the Portuguese F.1 Grand Prix at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve on the weekend of 30 April – 2 May.

The season-opener of the GT Sport-promoted series was originally scheduled at the same venue in Portimão one week earlier (24-25 April), but the latest changes in the F.1 calendar, with the Portuguese GP being allocated the slot on the first weekend of May, have led to the inclusion in the F.1 event, of the Euroformula Open.

To be part of such a prestigious platform is great news for the Euroformula Open, which has significantly strengthened its position in the single-seater formulae pyramid in recent years, and has seen a rising number of its graduates reaching the top ladders of the sports. This will be a great opportunity for the Euroformula Open drivers to showcase their talent, at the wheel of the highly-appraised Dallara 320 cars, in front of the élite of motorsports. The 2021 Formula 1 field will include this season three former EFO contenders, Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda and Jack Aitken. Last year, the Euroformula Open contributed than 6 contenders to the FIA Formula 2, while no less than 14 of former or present EFO drivers took part in the FIA European F.3.

Jesús Pareja, CEO of GT Sport: “We are delighted and honoured to be part of the race programme of the Portuguese F.1 Grand Prix with the Euroformula Open. I want to warmly thank the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve for making this possible, and we are delighted to be back to Portugal, a country with which we have a very special and long-lasting bond.  To have the opportunity to support a prestigious event such as the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix is a great recognition for the  Euroformula Open, which will have the opportunity to showcase itself in front of the pinnacle of our sports as one of the feeding formulae on the rise. We are already working with our Portuguese hosts to make this a unique and memorable event for the Euroformula community.”
