Cem Bölükbaşi will graduate to the FIA Formula 2 championship this year off the back of his strong performances in Euroformula in 2021.
Across five weekends in the GT Sport-promoted series, Bölükbaşi won two races, claimed one pole position and made the podium eight times with Van Amersfoort Racing. He moves straight up to F2 with Czech team Charouz Racing System.
The majority of Bölükbaşi’s single-seater racing experience is in Euroformula, having only raced at three circuits in Formula Regional machinery before making his EFO debut last summer. He’s also a regular in the European GT4 championship, and has an extensive Esports career that includes world championship wins, titles and time spent representing the AlphaTauri Formula 1 team.
“First of all, I really enjoyed every single lap I did with the Dallara 320,” Bölükbaşi said of his Euroformula experience. “I mean everybody told me that this was going to be a really fun car to drive, and it was correct. I really enjoyed every lap I’ve done. It was quite fun, I learned a lot, I learned a lot a lot considering the very little experience I had. I think this championship covers about 95% of my single-seater experience. So considering that, I think we made massive steps forward each weekend and we got closer and closer to the front and we finished with our strongest weekend overall.”
“I think Euroformula got me a lot of experience, and a lot of knowledge taken. I tried to be like a sponge this entire four or five rounds, trying to get as much information as I can. But also trying to understand what’s really going on in the car and around you while you’re driving, and about the limits of the car, what the car is capable of. I think I improved my driving a lot and I improved a lot as a driver itself.”
Picking a highlight from his single-seater career so far has come down to several Euroformula moments: “Winning Hungary, of course. First race in Euroformula, and win.” he said. “Technically, winning the Monza wet race [before a penalty]. That was my first wet race, and win. Winning at Barcelona from pole position, my first pole…Many highlights”.
