Double R Racing announces Zdenek Chovanec for 2021 Euroformula season

04.03.2021

Double R Racing has revealed Venezuelan-born Czech teenager Zdenek Chovanec as the first of the drivers it will field in its fleet of halo-shod Dallara 320 cars this year in Euroformula.

Chovanec, backed by Maxim, the international men's magazine, only started karting in 2018 but his motorsport career rapidly progressed so that now just three years later he is racing in Europe’s leading single-seater series.

“I’m super excited to start the season with Double R Racing and to drive the Dallara 320,” Chovanec said. “When I drove the car for the first time I was just amazed, it’s fantastic! I have a really great relationship with the team and I will push and do everything I can to deliver some good results.”

At first Chovanec raced in the Portguese national karting championship, before moving into single-seaters at the start of 2020 in Formula 4 United Arab Emirates. He claimed two podiums and seventh place in the standings, setting him up for another F4 campaign in the Italian championship.

While he missed the final two rounds, Chovanec still picked up a few strong results such as fifth place at Imola - a circuit he will race on in Euroformula this year. After the conclusion of his time in F4, he joined Double R for the post-season Euroformula group tests on the Iberian Peninsula to get his first taste of the lightweight Dallara 320 car and also made a points-scoring appearance in the Asian Formula 3 championship.

Double R’s Euroformula team manager Piers Hunnisett said: “Zdenek tested for us during the winter tests and impressed us with his performance and maturity, we are looking forward to the season to see his progress. Obviously he only has one year of single-seater experience but we see that he has the potential to progress in the Dallara 320.”

British team Double R has raced in Euroformula since 2019, taking its first pole win with Linus Lundqvist that year and then its first win with Louis Foster a year later. It has further driver announcements lined up for the season ahead, which will consist entirely of current Formula 1 grand prix venues.
